Overview
Welcome to the Ministry To Marketplace Minute! Understanding the landscape of what is happening in the job market is critical to winning. Everything changes so rapidly. Trends, what is working, and what is not working. I’m going to break down what to expect in 2026 on your job search from the Huntr Annual Job Search Report, with some of my own observations and commentary. So let’s dive in.
Today's Ministry To Marketplace Minute:
Mindset Shift: Preparing yourself to transition from ministry to the marketplace

🧠 MINDSET SHIFT: Preparing yourself to transition from ministry to the marketplace.
The market is changing all the time. But what works stays the same.
When watching the news, reading layoff headlines, or reddit threads, it is important to understand this reality: people hire people.
And people don’t change.
We want connection. We want belonging. We want to be accepted. We are biased. We are judgmental. We hold on to first impressions longer than we should.
That hasn’t changed.
But the strategies to connect. The platforms where jobs get posted. Even job titles.
Those do change.
Where this data comes from.
The data I’m going to talk about is based on 1.7 million applications, 1 million job postings, 243,000 resumes, and a 1,049-responder survey.
So is it all inclusive? No. Will it reveal trends? Yes.
The important thing is that numbers matter.
Understanding the job search world that you are entering will help you make important decisions, like:
How much time will you likely need to land a job?
How many applications might it take to get one interview?
And even what to focus on in your job search.
Three important points before we move on.
This report comes heavily from the tech sector, which I will talk more about.
Almost 40% of these respondents were looking for entry-level jobs, not necessarily jobs for former pastors.
Most of the users from this report are changing companies, but into similar job types or fields, not necessarily careers or industries like a ministry to marketplace transition.
♟️ STRATEGY SHIFT: Trends for your pastor career change.
There are three key trends we’re going to talk about here.
Timelines
Remote vs Hybrid vs In-Person
Follow up and ghosting
Let’s talk timelines.
Notable statistics:
The median time from first application to offer is 83 days, but 10% of these respondents reported it taking 5 months or more.
In that group above, those respondents didn’t even get their first interview until almost 4 months into their job search.
20% of job seekers reported submitting over 100 applications.
My thoughts:
It is taking longer for people to get jobs. Even the people who have directly transferable skills and experience.
That means, if you want to get a new job, you need to plan for it. If you’re leaving vocational ministry, give yourself 6 months of job searching, minimum.
If it goes more quickly, great! If it takes a bit longer, at least you’re not surprised. This will prevent burnout and job search fatigue.
I did a newsletter last year on timelines to expect when looking for a job transitioning from ministry by job title. You can read that here: How Long Does It Take to Get a Corporate Job After Ministry? Timelines, Trends & Realistic Expectations for Former Pastors
Remote or bust!
Notable statistics:
Almost 90% want a remote or hybrid job.
This is primarily coming from the tech industry and similar industries where everything is done on a computer. Anything blue collar or blue collar adjacent will look very different, maybe even the opposite.
My thoughts:
Most people are considering the flexibility of remote or hybrid a requirement in their job search, rather than a perk now.
Employers are beginning to understand that, but some aren’t going to budge.
If you are a former pastor and are OK with in-office 5 days a week, like it has always been done, you will be a competitive candidate at companies where that is a requirement - because 90% of candidates automatically will rule that job out.
We’re in a ghost town.
Notable statistics:
From the study, almost 90% were ghosted at some point in their job search process.
Some platforms had lower response rates than others. Google Jobs was the highest at 11.3% response rate to interviews. LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter were some of the lowest at 3.1% and 2.8%, with Indeed just a bit higher at 4.5%.
Response times to applications vary from 7 days to 30 days from company to company. Some might be shorter, some might be longer.
Median wait time from application to first interview/phone screen was 23 days.
My thoughts:
Expect to be ghosted. It sucks, but this is life now. Don’t let it get you down.
If you don’t hear back within 7 days, that doesn’t mean you were ghosted. In fact, that is a really good response time right now. After 7 days, follow up a few times (once a week or so) via email. After 30 days, you can move on.
That being said, don’t just apply to your dream job and then wait. You could be waiting 3 months to get an offer. Then if you don’t get it, you’re back at square one. Have 5-10 applications out at a time, minimum.
Don’t rely on mass job board sites to apply for jobs. Find them there, yes. But don’t rely on them. Instead, once you find a job that fits you, apply directly on the company website.
In the Interview Accelerator, people are averaging between 35%-50% interview rate. That means that they are landing first interviews for 1 out of every 2 or 3 jobs they apply for.
✅ DO THIS RIGHT NOW: Evaluate what is working and what isn’t.
Think about your job search strategy. Evaluate where your expectations are not in line with the reality of job search trends right now.
Evaluate your strategy. Are you doing enough of the right things to get your next job?
What do you need to change right now that will make a tangible difference in your job search?
