Overview

Welcome to the Ministry To Marketplace Minute! Today, I want to take a peek behind the curtain into my own ministry transition. Specifically, the discernment process of how I thought through (and what I wish I knew) that gave me confidence that moving into the marketplace was the right step. So let’s dive in.

Today's Ministry To Marketplace Minute:

  • Three Things That Were Helpful

  • Three Things I Wish I Knew

  • Do This Right Now: Do that one thing.

  • Who Will Hire Me?: 5 ministry friendly organizations with jobs for ex-pastors.

✅ 3 THINGS THAT WERE HELPFUL

The ministry transition was the toughest transition and one of the most difficult things I have ever done.

Amidst the one full year of discerning and wrestling, “Should I work in ministry or not”? And then the full year of looking for a job, there were some things that were very helpful to me.

But I learned a lot about discernment and transition. So I hope this is helpful to you.

I recorded a video that you can watch, or you can read the highlights summarized in the rest of the newsletter below.

There were three things that were really helpful for me in my transition.

  1. Putting words around my frustrations with the work by taking a personal values assessment.

This allowed me to objectively see the difference between what was important to me about work and what was important to the powers that be. Rather than being constantly frustrated, I became neutral. Values are not good or bad, but they are mine, and they run deep. I wasn’t going to change the leadership. They weren’t going to change me. That was good to know.

To find these, I took a free values assessment online. There are plenty that are great. But we created one for you that you can download here.

  1. Aligning my decision making with my vision for my family’s future.

There was no upward mobility in responsibility or financially, unless I took on roles that I didn’t want to do. It was already plain that culturally I wasn’t a fit, but my skill set also lent itself to roles that did not exist (and would not). The vision my wife and I had included time and financial goals that would never have happened working in a church context.

  1. Paying attention to what was interesting to me and where I spent my free time.

My coworkers and friends at the church spent their lunch breaks, their off time, their Fridays studying theology and learning Greek and Hebrew. I spent that time studying for an MBA and reading leadership articles.

My initial thought was, “Look at the wonderful diversity of thought and expertise I will bring to this organization!” But combined with point number 1, I quickly realized that made me an outlier rather than the norm. When the executive pastor at the church learned I was studying to take the standardized test for an MBA, he told me that he believed I was valuable to the church, but my skills might be better used in a business context. That was incredibly freeing for me.

💡 3 THINGS I WISH I KNEW

Those were helpful, but there were three major gaps that I wish I knew looking back.

  1. I didn’t have clarity on what job type I wanted to do next.

This left me paralyzed and extended the process by at least a year. Not only did I not know where to aim, but I was unsure of how I would provide for my family. This is why this is the first thing that we do in the Interview Accelerator. Not knowing how I would provide was the main roadblock for me moving forward with confidence.

  1. I went through the process alone.

Well, I went through it with people, but no one who really understood. I had friends who listened and tried to give advice. But transitioning from ministry has a different edge to it. A spiritual pressure that is hard to explain. I wish I spent time with people who made that transition as well, so they could speak wisdom into me.

If you haven’t listened to the Holy Shift podcast yet, I believe that it will be enlightening to hear some conversations with former pastors. You might find that you’re not as alone as you think.

  1. I didn’t have a good decision making process to listen to God and follow His voice for this decision.

I had fears around leaving “the Lord’s work” and an organization that measurably was making an impact on a global scale. It all felt so important. How could I leave?

The reality was, I was too caught up in expectations and pressures and living up to a reputation that I had built. Looking back, I was insecure and scared of disappointing people. That voice was louder than the Lord’s. It drove me. And I wasn’t spiritually or emotionally healthy enough to actually distinguish between the two.

Some incredibly helpful resources in my journey have been:

Final note.

I believe that to make a transition well, you need to be convinced, maybe even convicted, in your heart that it is the best move for you and for your family.

Grieving this transition is normal. Regret, though, that’s not something you want to bring your family into.
